At present, most of these types on the market use silica gel, but due to the skyrocketing price of silica gel materials and the shortage of raw materials, many manufacturers have turned their attention to polymer materials TPE materials. The feel and elasticity of TPE materials are very similar to those of silica gel. It’s similar and recyclable, and the price/performance ratio is much higher. Let’s compare the difference between silica gel and TPE.

What are TPE and silicone?
Silica gel alias: silicic acid gel, with solid block or transparent granular appearance (solid silica gel and liquid silica gel). It is a highly active adsorption material, which is an amorphous substance. The main component of silica gel is silica, which is chemically stable and does not burn.
TPE is also called thermoplastic elastomer, which is transparent or solid color granular. It is a high molecular polymer or high molecular alloy material with a rubber soft segment (or rubber phase) and a plastic hard segment (or continuous plastic phase) structure. The most common TPE refers to polymer alloy materials that are blended together with SEBS and SBS as base materials.

The difference between TPE and silica gel:
They are different in analysis structure: silica gel is an elastomer connected by silicon-oxygen bonds in the main chain, and the side chain is generally methyl, that is, CH3. TPE is a thermoplastic elastomer, including styrene, olefin, and polyurethane. The main difference in molecular structure between the two is that one is the SI02 structure and the other is the CC structure.
From the processing performance point of view: silica gel needs to be vulcanized and heated for molding, while TPE can be processed without vulcanization. Silicone is difficult to form in terms of processing, but TPE is simple to produce and process; TPE material is a thermoplastic elastomer material that can be 100% recycled, while silica gel needs to be chemically cross-linked, which is a thermosetting material and cannot be recycled again.
Silicone has an advantage over TPE in terms of high temperature resistance. The temperature resistance of silica gel is generally between 200°C and 300°C, while TPE is theoretically generally resistant to temperature between 130°C and 150°C.
In terms of price, TPE is more advantageous, except for special TPE materials, such as halogen-free flame retardant, food-grade and other characteristics.

From the comparison of the performance difference between TPE material and silica gel, it can be seen that both materials have excellent performance and have their own unique application fields. For some areas of silicone with lower requirements, TPE materials can be used to form a "silica-like" effect.

After all, TPE materials are easy to process and do not require vulcanization. The crushed materials and waste materials can be recycled and reused 100%, saving costs, flexible formulations, and easy adjustment of material characteristics, which can better meet the different requirements of customers.

The characteristics and cost of TPE provide more possibilities for people's work and life. Its adjustable hardness and physical properties provide product designers with a wide range of imagination and design space. Its environmentally friendly and non-toxic characteristics, Trustworthy for consumers
